With the start of the new school year, it is a good time to go over some of the items that concern us as Physical Education Teachers. If at all possible, try to see that your child or children wear the proper shoes to gym. This is so important because of the leg, knee, and ankle injuries that could result due to the wearing of shoes or sneakers not meant for the stress of what we do in the gym. The proper shoe should have shoelaces to prevent the shoe from falling off the foot, or worse, rotating on the foot causing and causing an ankle or foot injury. Platform or high soled sneakers can at times cause the student to lose their balance and actually fall. Zipper type pull on sneakers, or the new fad- over the calf boots often offer little or no traction or support and often stretch and can come off the foot. This can be especially dangerous during an activity that requires any kind of a kicking motion, running, or quick starts and stops. Any of our female students wearing a dress or skirt, should also wear a pair of shorts underneath. This is so the child can still participate in the exercise and activities for that gym period. Health Tip: If you find it necessary to snack, try to avoid items high in sugar, or that contain Saturated Fats. A good snack food is any type of nut. They are high in protein, and their fat level, although high, is unsaturated. Avoid the salted type, especially if you have high blood pressure. Most important is to set a time limit as to how late you can snack. Allow sometime for digestion, so you will not be going to sleep with a full stomach. Grades K-1: Will be starting on their basic motor skills such as skipping, hopping, and galloping. We will also work on catching and throwing throughout the year. Cash and Flee games such as Men From Mars and Sharks and Minnows teach the student how to dodge and run. Any of these games are simple tag games set to a different name. Grades 2-5: Developing strenght, cardio-endurance, and improving their overall fitness level will be the main focus this year, and will be tied into the HJB/PE tournament. Throughout the school year we will do activities and sports where each class earns points for participation and sportsmanship. Activities include team as well as individual events. We also have days where classes do exercises, and earn points for how well each class does. So far all the classes are participating and enjoying the event. Every class earns points each time they come to gym class. The event they are now participating in is a fitness unit where they are doing strength building activities.
